1 Day 1 World: 9:00 – 10:00 PM

The only thing I’ve missed about East Coast summers

Are lightning bugs.

Long ago-

Caught by a little girl,

the glowing insects

lit up Mason jars

Set by the bedside.

Released

during childhood dreams

by my father…

only to be caught again

the next evening.

My daughters grew up hearing this story. For my birthday, they surprised me with a West Coast way to illuminate Mason jars during summer evenings…solar powered jar lids. Much to my delight, the jar is not emptied as I sleep and is ready to glow anew after 9:00 when the sun has set!

    1. I’m sure you will find them, Lisa 🙂 If all fails, Amazon should do the trick. But, if you find them in one of those fun little Seattle shops… you could take with you on your vacation. We took ours with us camping last time and we so happy we did. Well, except for the day it rained and the solar charge was a bit weak that night!

  1. Having lived on the West Coast my whole life, I did not see a lightening bug until a road trip that took me through Columbia, Missouri a few years back. Needless to say it was pretty amazing even though it was at the back of the hotel parking lot. Your solar powered mason jar lid has me intrigued now that I have a few extra half gallon size jars.
